Engineered Retaining Walls
Stone Strong Retaining Walls in Halifax
Stone Strong walls are a true gravity wall with no geogrid or tiebacks needed. Built to engineered drawings, Stone Strong walls go up faster, drain through the wall itself and look like natural cut stone.

Why We Build With Stone Strong
-
Massive 24 sq ft blocks: each main block is 3 ft tall by 8 ft wide, so walls go up with far fewer pieces
-
Hollow-core design: lighter per square foot for faster, more economical installation
-
Built-in drainage: the centre of each block is filled with clean crushed stone so water drains through the wall
-
True gravity wall: no geogrid or tiebacks, avoiding conflicts with utilities and property lines
-
Tall walls: gravity walls up to about 15 to 20 ft depending on soil, and up to 40 ft with engineered soil reinforcement
-
Straight or curved: tapered blocks allow curves, corners and steps
-
Natural stone look: a chiselled-stone face at a fraction of the cost of real stone
-
Fully engineered: designed structurally and geotechnically and cast from 4,000 psi concrete
Where Engineered Retaining Walls Make Sense
Stone Strong walls are a strong fit for steep yards and driveways, commercial sites and parking lots, shorelines, ponds and drainage channels, erosion control, slope stabilisation and roadwork. If you need to hold back a lot of soil, or want a wall that will last for decades, an engineered block wall is the right choice.
How We Work
01.
Site review and engineering
We review your site, soils, utilities and drainage, and coordinate engineered drawings and permits.
02.
Excavation and base
We excavate to grade, compact the foundation and build a level concrete or crushed-stone pad.
03.
Set and fill
Blocks are set course by course, each one filled with crushed stone and the backfill compacted in lifts.
04.
Cap and finish
We install top blocks, caps or steps, grade for drainage and clean up the site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall in Halifax?
Taller walls, walls supporting driveways or buildings, and most commercial walls need an engineered design and a permit. We coordinate both for you.
How tall can a Stone Strong wall be?
As a gravity wall, roughly 15 to 20 feet depending on the site and soil. With engineered soil reinforcement, walls up to 40 feet are possible.
How fast is installation?
Each main block covers 24 square feet, so a small crew can build a large wall much faster than with small blocks or poured concrete.
How does the wall handle water?
The hollow blocks are filled with free-draining crushed stone, giving the wall built-in drainage. We add drain pipe where the design calls for it.
